Composer in storm of silent applause: sounds and images from Beethoven to Fred Frith
MAURICIO KAGEL: “Ludwig van”
B/W, Germany, 100 mins, 1969; 2006
The biggest film venture by the Argentine-born composer Mauricio Kagel, who for several decades has been one of the greats of contemporary avant garde music. A non-linear epic meditation on deafness, talking books, the skull of “Ludwig van,” the power and volume of sounds, musical wallpaper, media … and of course Beethoven. Kagel presents the greatest composer of all time in this film with the help of Joseph Beuys, Dieter Roth, Robert Filiou and others. Now seen for the first time in its full, original version.
