János Szirtes was born in Budapest in 1954. He studied graphic arts at the Bratislava Academy of Fine Arts (1975–1977) and at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts (1977–1980). He was a member of the Indigo Group between 1978 and 1984. He was granted the Derkovits Scholarship (1984–1987), the scholarship of the Hungarian Academy in Rome (1989), and the Munkácsy Prize (1990). In 1989, he became assistant professor and later associate professor of the Hungarian University of Applied Arts (MOME). He is currently a professor and the Head of Department at the Media Design Department of MOME’s Media Institute. His works can be found in the collections of Ludwig Museum (Budapest and Aachen) and in several other public collections in Hungary.
