Sass started her career in the late seventies, initially creating figurative sculptures. By the early 1980s, she had developed her own form of expression, and from then until the early 1990s she worked exclusively with wooden beams, creating abstract, non-figurative objects and spatial installations. One of these objects is her work Untitled (Corner Object). Balance is central to all the pieces in the series: the thin, finely crafted beams are used to create the artworks by excluding all other materials and connecting elements. In each case, the finished objects emerge from the perfect balance and interaction of one, two, three, four or any number of beams.
