Kinder Album is the pseudonym of an artist living in Lviv, who emerged on social media in 2012 with her simple, witty and sometimes provocative drawings. She borrowed her name from the short, light pieces of music for children that are common in classical music. Tchaikovsky’s Children’s Album for Piano (Detsky Albom) and contemporary Russian composer Sergey Kuryokhin’s music of the same name have inspired her. Sexuality, gender roles, social taboos, death and war are frequent themes in her work, combined with a visual language reminiscent of children’s drawings, a frankness of expression and a taboo-busting honesty. His painting Ukraine Will Resist was painted during a very intense period after the outbreak of war, when, after the initial shock, both the civilian population and the artistic community were looking for different forms of resistance. Her watercolours and large-scale paintings based on them from this period explore the absurdity of war and the changing role of women in Ukrainian society. Viktória Popovics
