Edgars Iltners studied at the Art Academy of Latvia between 1949−1956, where he also taught from 1960. Holder of the title “Folk Artist of the Soviet Union”, Iltners was a member of the Soviet Academy of Arts and participated in several state-organised exhibitions home and abroad. His works can be found in the greatest state collections, such as the Tretyakov Gallery or the Latvian National Museum of Art. Initially Iltners followed the severe style in his painting, and participated in developing it in his own country. However, on account of the strong contradiction between eternal values and lasting principles on the one hand, and the Soviet reality on the other hand, not to mention the constant compromises, from the seventies, Latvian artists, including Iltners, began turning towards their own national identity. They began depicting folk themes and a personal approach, the relationship of man and nature came to the forefront. A lyrical, romantic approach, intimate contemplation appeared in painting. Spring Morning represents this latter tendency within the oeuvre of Iltners, most of all evocative of impressionism with its pink and green tones. Its fine lyricism demonstrates the artist’s distancing from the severe style.
