In 1997 Albania underwent an economic and social crash: the market economy introduced in the mid-1990s, after almost 50 years of isolation and communist dictatorship, had soon turned into financial chaos on account of the government-supported pyramid scheme projects. The population took to the streets and plundered military bases, took arms, resulting in a quasi civil war. The state television almost entirely ignored the clashes—people were at best informed by international channels about the extent of the disorder. This absurd situation inspired Shkurti to use Disney’s Alice in Wonderland in his video. Shkurti used two videotapes for the montage: by mixing the cartoon with news footages of international channels, Shkurti allows a new understanding of “Wonderland.” KB
