Past Meets Future: Re-opening the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam – A public lecture by Margriet Schavemaker

The recent re-opening of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam brings a legendary player back to the international museum arena. In this lecture Margriet Schavemaker (head of collections and research at the Stedelijk Museum) will present the exciting additional wing of the museum, designed by Benthem Crouwel architects, as well as the current collection, presentations and exhibitions. Working from the probing question 'Is the Stedelijk Museum the museum of the future?,' Schavemaker will discuss the institutional vision of the museum and its embrace of extensive public programming and dedication to pioneering new media applications.

Margriet Schavemaker is art historian, philosopher and media specialist. After a career as a lecturer and assistant professor at the art history and media studies departments at the University of Amsterdam, she currently holds the position of head of collections and research at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Schavemaker has written extensively on contemporary art and theory, (co)edited several volumes (for example: Now is the Time: Art and Theory in the 21st Century (2009), Vincent Everywhere: Van Gogh's (Inter) National Identities (2010)) and is an acclaimed curator of discursive events and public programs. In the past years new media has been high on Schavemaker's agenda, resulting in the ARtours project; this creation of an augmented reality platform for smartphones enables museums to present their collection in innovative and interactive ways both inside and outside the museum.

The lecture will be held in English.
