Artist in Residence 2017 - A Lecture by Gentian Shkurti and Romi Avidan

This Autumn Albanian artist Gentian Shkurti and Israeli artist Romi Avidan were given the opportunity to participate in Ludwig Museum’s residency program.

The artists will give a lecture and short report of their time spent in Budapest, followed by an informal talk enabling a deeper understanding of their œuvre and artistic approach.

During their one-month stay in Budapest, the two artists could pursue an individual research about the city and Hungary, while each had the possiblity to complete a site-specific project.

The new works of the artists in residence will be on view in the open spaces of Ludwig Museum between October 16 – November 12, 2017.

Gentian SHKURTI(Albania, 1977) studied Painting at the Academy of Arts in Tirana, Albania, where he later worked two years as associate professor. His works have been exhibited in several major institutions in Europe: Promesses du Passé / “Tirana Case”, Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, 2010; curator: Christine Macel), In The Gorges Of The Balkans. A Report, Fridericianum Museum (Kassel, 2003; curator: René Bloch); Blood and Honey – Future’s in the Balkans, Sammlung Essl (Vienna, 2003; curator: Harald Szeemann); 54th Venice Biennale (Albanian Pavilion, 2011; curator: Riccardo Caldura). His works have also been displayed at the New York Chelsea Art Museum, the Ljubljana Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Kosovo, as well as at the National Gallery of Tirana; Shkurti took part in the First Tirana Biennial (2001). He was one of the invited artists of the 2016 exhibition at Ludwig Museum titled The Whale that Was a Submarine – Contemporary Positions from Albania and Kosovo. His work Alice in Wonderland was since acquired by the Ludwig Stiftung’s Collection. He lives and works in Tirana.

Romi AVIDAN (Israel, 1990) finished her studies at the Department of Fine Art at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem. At the moment, she mainly works as a photographer and a video artist, as well as a writer. Most of her artistic practice are text based: she offers a displacement of texts taken from the everyday in order to reveal their potential poetics through reconstruction and reduction.
