Like Turner and Constable in painting, Andy Goldsworthy is a British nature artist. His land art works, installations and sculptures of archetypal signs are made from leaves, stones, snow, dust, ice, “rivers and tides” and “nature’s windfalls.” Most of his works are ephemeral, existing in the moment, simultaneously evoking Tibetan mandalas and Zen rock gardens. The major museums of the world collect photo-documentation of Goldsworthy’s art, which, just like the film itself, is defined in time. With sequences of images reminiscent in some places reminiscent of Kubrick, Rivers and Tides is a reflection on transience, human mortality and Wittgensteinian silence, with music by the great avant garde composer Fred Frith.
