Composer in storm of silent applause: sounds and images from Beethoven to Fred Frith
PAUL MORRISSEY: Beethoven's Nephew
Colour, France/Germany, in English, 103 mins, 1985
Starring: Wolfgang Reichmann, Dietmar Prinz, Jane Birkin, Nathalie Baye
In 1957, Jacque Brenner wrote Beethoven’s fictional memoirs, based on the work of several biographers, and written for the composer’s nephew, Karl van Beethoven. Brenner’s book presented Beethoven and his surroundings from the human angle, in which Karl was the “victim.” In 1972, Luigi Magnani also wrote a book abut Karl van Beethoven, Il Niote di Beethoven. Paul Morrissey, with his usual singular vision, took both of these books as the basis for his last film, Beethoven’s Nephew.
