Peter Farago & Ingela Klemetz Farago: Women in Chanel

1 June 2016

July 08, 2016 - September 11, 2016.

Ludwig Museum – Museum of Contemporary Art organized several successful photography exhibitions over the past few decades, introducing, among others, influential figures of fashion photography such as Cecil Beaton, Helmut Newton, and Martin Munkácsi.

Next, in a line of photographers raising fashion photography to an artistic level, the museum presents the Swedish Peter Farago and Ingela Klemetz Farago, who, in close co-operation with CHANEL, created the photo series Northern Women in Chanel in 2010 and Women in Chanel in 2015. The artists were given the opportunity to choose among haute couture collections and ready-to-wear created by Karl Lagerfeld. Several well-known super models from Northern and Baltic countries as well as from Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Romania took part in the project. This has resulted in two lavish coffee table books and a touring photography exhibition.
30 large prints, selected among the nearly 200 photographs from the book Women in Chanel will be exhibited—“starring” the internationally recognized Hungarian models Barbara Palvin, Enikő Mihalik, and Axente Vanessa. In addition, 82 large prints from the first book, Northern Women in CHANEL, and exclusive fashion films with Barbara Palvin will also compose the Budapest exhibition.

The duo pays attention to the tiniest details, when choosing the model, the outfit, the settings, or even the lights. Their aim is to capture timeless beauty and elegance, manifesting in the perfect moment. Classics from the history of photography and film compose their references, while they gather inspiration from nature and the process of artistic collaboration. Fashion, for the Faragos, is a sovereign art form, a unique means of self-expression, giving them the rare opportunity to depict their own visions and stories through their photos. Following the noblest of traditions of portrait and fashion photography, their sophisticated and poetic, yet magnificent and spectacular compositions represent the idea behind CHANEL’s artistic designs. The series on Eastern-Europe includes folklore motifs, extraordinary sights—the landscapes of rural Hungary—as well as successful Hungarian models. Profits from sales of the books will be donated to the independent children’s rights organization Save the Children.

Peter Farago was born in Hungary and started taking photos when he was four years old. Among other things he has done several covers for Russian Vogue.

Ingela Klemetz Farago comes from the music industry, but she soon started working as a stylist together with her husband Peter Farago. The couple now works as a photo-duo and a publisher.
