Tillmann Roth was born in 1975 and graduated from the Kunsthochschule für Medien of Cologne to win the Nam Jun Paik International Prize for media art of the State of North Rhine Westphalia in the young artist category. He is a participant in the four-month long residency programme of the C3: Centre for Culture and Communications.
The Spletizizers is a DVD-installation in search of new paths in the field of audio-visual sensory perception and communications. A number of significant media artists (such as F.M. Einheit / Roland Seidel, Ticklish, 242 pilots, Dfuse / Solar X, Coloma, New Scrollers) were invited to Cologne in September of 2002 to investigate, over six performances, how sound and visuals overlap. The wooden pavilion exhibited was the node of communications and meetings for the artists. The purpose of the exhibition is to allow the public a glance into the results of the creative work done by the team. As imagined by Tillmann Roth, the pavilion realises a ‘minimal utopia’ of the connection between friendship, trust and knowledge.
The title Spletizizers is taken from the first name of Alan Splet (1939–1995), the sound designer who worked with David Lynch on the creation of such films as the Dune, Eraserhead and Blue Velvet. Their co-operation might be considered the archetype of the creative co-operation in audio-visual art that the pavilion portrays. Alan Splet’s own samplers are also used for the work, by the kind permission of the artist’s widow.
An audio-visual performance will take place at the opening, with the participation of the British media artist scopac.
