The exhibition showcases the most significant movements and artists of the past fifty years by presenting a selection of one of the world’s most important collections of modern and contemporary art. Musée National d’Art Moderne Centre George Pompidou was founded in 1947 with works by Picasso, Braque and Kandinsky among others and presents in Budapest works by Victor Vasarely, Joseph Albers, Yves Klein, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Daniel Buren, Barbara Kruger, Chéri Samba, Marina Abramović, Braco Dimitrijević, Louise Bourgeois, Pipilotti Rist, Thomas Ruff, etc.
The title of the exhibition refers to an experience visitors quite often face when instead of pre-created patterns they are forced by contemporary artworks to react in a new, inventive, sometimes even exploratory way. To find a connection with these works and to find the classical idea of beauty in them visitors should turn to their own, sometimes totally everyday experiences and innermost feelings. Most of the artworks in Budapest represent tendencies which expect this active visitor’s attitude as the most important proviso of artistic reception. (Fluxus, Concept art, Political Art )
Another point of interest is that the concept of the exhibition comes jointly from Catherine Garnier, curator of Musée National d’Art Moderne and Želimir Koščević, curator of Muzej suvremene umjetnosti, Zagreb.
With this exhibition Ludwig Múzeum, Budapest continues the tradition of a long cooperation with the museums in Zagreb and Centre Pompidou, Paris respectively.
