János Sugár already became well-known in the late 1970s/early 1980s, partly because of his activities as a student of the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts and partly as a member of Miklós Erdély’s Indigo Group. His artistic oeuvre is very complex, consisting predominantly of installations, videos, and graphics. In the 1980s and 1990s, he also created performances, in which he often used elements of his installations. Sometimes the performance itself was a choreographed, staged version of the process of creating an installation. A distinctive feature of his works is the theme of public space (encompassing the Internet as well) and its critical use as a venue for art.
