Ágnes Eperjesi’s artwork Expiring Destiny was shown for the first time at the Ludwig Museum’s exhibition Handle with Care. The works on display explore the process of grieving following the fatal accident of Eperjesi’s parents. The dates given in the artwork’s title (1997 to the present) indicate that the emotional labour of coming to terms with the loss of a loved one has no end point, and is a constant process that can last for decades, even a lifetime. Bereavement is one of our most personal and private affairs, a form of self-care that can run the gamut of emotions from anger and guilt to relief and sadness. In Eperjesi’s work, the focus of artistic attention is on conflicting emotions that have been at odds for decades and their resolution.
