The exhibition focuses on questions as well as techniques of asking questions related to contemporary art, with particular emphasis on the practice of asking questions as a tool of pedagogy and art education. The exhibition dedicates special attentionto methods and techniques that facilitate reception as well as getting acquainted with and learning to appreciate artistic thinking. Our aim is to employ such forms of questioning and work methods supporting perception that facilitate active dialogue with works of art, encouraging interpretation and a profound reception of art.
What does it mean... what can I do if... where does it arrive... how much does it cost... how can I pay... when can I collect it...? We could go on and on with the list of frequently asked questions about the difficulties of daily life.
This exhibition is inspired by frequently asked questions about art, more specifically, contemporary art. As a contemporary institution, it is important that we respond to the requirement that a museum should promote broad access to contemporary art. To this end, our exhibition highlights questions exploring the relation between modern/contemporary art and the classical traditions of fine art. In our experience, a significant proportion of museum visitors approach modern and contemporary trends from the perspective of classical art. Our goal is to promote openness to the appreciation of new trends.
The best starting point for interpretation are the works of art on display, but of course we also provide explanatory texts to accompany them. In every case, the provided answers are optional and open to further reflection, and visitors are encouraged to ask further questions.
This question-based methodological exhibition is designed to facilitate reception, which is why additional media, games and exercises are placed alongside the works and across the exhibition space. The answer is found on the wall next to the artwork, covered with a sheet of paper by default – allowing the spectator to answer the question on their own. Visitors can decide for themselves whether or not they want to read the answer. This form of exhibition can be ideal for teachers to use the space independently, applying the works to the pedagogical problem or curriculum they are focusing on at the moment. Our museum education department provides professional support and training for this.
The exhibition is recommended for school and university groups, teachers and museum educators, and not just for those who are familiar with art history and contemporary art. The exhibition is also aimed at people who are themselves not creative artists, who have not studied art history or who are not regular museum-goers. At the same time, we are also expecting the broader professional audience – artists, art educators, curators.
The exhibition is associated with the book Proc umeni? (Why Art?), compiled by the organisations involved in the international platform for contemporary art education Máš umělecké střevo? (Do you have a knack for art?).
