Eva Koťátková’s video installation Sit up Straight! features four children trying to learn “proper” behaviour while being forced into stocks resembling medieval torture devices. These behaviours apply equally to boys and girls, with different and opposite content. One such contraption works as a kind of book holder keeping the book at “appropriate” and standardized distance from the reader, depriving this otherwise enjoyable activity from every personal and comfortable aspect. The fact that this kind of regulation is not only inhumane but also counterproductive is well illustrated by the differences in efficiency between the various educational models. The ruling power, however, is capable of making itself believe that the more aggressively it practices ideological control, the more efficient it will be. however, this often sows the seeds of rebellion in its subjects.
