Attila Csörgő’s Wheel is based on the dual play of movement and light. He originally designed the machine for the Museum of Ethnography’s exhibition Time-Images that opened on December 31, 2000, to celebrate the New Millennium. The work’s final concept endeavors to grasp the wheel’s every possible direction of movement. It is based on a stroboscopic effect: the wheel is lit by three different light sources through a perforated disk that moves in sync with it. The disk splits the light into tiny flashes that, however, are perceived as continuous by the human eye. BK
