Madame Wang`s
Language: English, 95 min, 1981. USA
Patrick Schoene, Christina Indri, William Edgar, Susan Blond, Jimmy Madaus, Virginia Bruce.
Screenplay and directed by: PAUL MORRISSEY

Lutz (Patrick Schoene), is a self-proclaimed East German sailor-spy who has jumped ship while in Long Beach harbor so he can prepare the way for a planned Soviet invasion. Lutz is a handsome, musclebound type who attracts a following as diverse as a mixed salad: a rotund mother and son whose affection for hamburgers, fries, and ice-cream is self-evident, a gay pimp cum door-knob collector, an attractive call-girl from the Temple of Dance Arts, and other flotsam and jetsam of the human condition. The antics of this troupe enliven the film as they head to Madame Wang's punk show, where Lutz shows off an eccentricity of his own. Finally, Lutz has to return to his ship before his "spying" episode is discovered. (Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide)

Forty-Deuce is about street hustling, dope-pushing addicts that live in and around the notorious 42 st. Area in N.Y. during the early 80's. Anyone mourning the demise of the grimy 42nd st. will want to check out this ragged slice-of-lowlife directed by the one and only Paul Morrissey. This movie was based on the off-broadway play by Alan Bowne. Kevin Bacon who was in the play, recreates his role of Rickey, a greasy haired, dealer/junkie who enjoys passing out in the Port Authority mens room. When he's not nodding off, his mouth doesn't stop, with some of the raunchiest, racist dialogue imaginable. Events turn heavy when a naked 12 year old runaway turns up in a hotel room bed, and Rickey comes up with idiotic plan to make a few extra bucks. He convinces a wealthy john that he accidentally killed the kid (the john played magnificently by Orson Bean). The second half of the Film is the most interesting when the screen splits in two to show the multiple action taking place in the cramped hotel room for the grand finale. This film contains several solid performances, colorful monologues, a believable stench of the city, and warholesque experimental shooting makes this one of Morrissey's memorable films ever. (IMDb)

Manhattan is torn apart by a vicious gang war between underage, rival Latino and Brazilian gangs, with a German drug supplier caught in the middle. Quirky, thrilling, and unforgettable, this vivid, witty, and action-packed portrait of New York's mean streets from cult director Paul Morrissey (Heat, Blood for Dracula) influenced an entire generation of urban and gangster cinema.

Beethoven's Nephew

Language: English, 103 min, 1985. German - French
Wolfgang Reichmann, Dietmar Prinz, Jane Birkin, Nathalie Baye, Mathieu Carrière, Ulrich Berr, Erna Korhel, Pieter Daniel
Directed by: PAUL MORRISSEY

Andy Warhol "graduate" Paul Morrissey surprised his followers with his sensitive direction of the 1985 costume drama Beethoven's Nephew (Le Neveu de Beethoven) The eponymous character, Karl Beethoven (Dietmar Prinz), is snatched from his mother's home by egomaniacal composer Ludwig Van Beethoven (Wolfgang Reichmann). It is Beethoven's contention that nephew Karl is in the clutches of a "demon" (his mother!), and that only by taking charge of Karl himself can the composer tap the boy's inherent musical genius. Ultimately Karl rebels against Beethoven's obsessiveness by developing a relationship with a beautiful actress (Nathalie Baye). As Karl's independence grows, Beethoven's health declines, possibly because of the psychological ramifications of watching his surrogate son grow away from him. Adapted by Morrissey and Mathieu Carriere from a novel by Luigi Magnani, Beethoven's Nephew was released in the US nearly two years after its French premiere. (Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide)

VI. 17 December 2009. Thursday, 18.00.
Rolando Klein: CHAC: DIOS DE LA ILUVIA (CHAC: THE RAIN GOD)

Language: Tzotzil, Spanish, English subs. Colour. 95 min. Mexico, 1974.

A very unique and incredible film, Rolando Klein made it in 1974 after spending two years living among the Tzeltal Indians of Chiapas, collecting stories, events, and anecdotes from their culture. A graduate of UCLA film school and of Chilean birth, Klein "returned to his Hispanic roots" at the urging of director and mentor Jules Dassin in 1972. A village is experiencing a drought detrimental to their crops and, resultantly, their survival. After only failure comes from consultation with their usual shaman, they attempt to gain aid from a mysterious diviner living in the mountains, who is said to practice the ancient ways forgotten by all else in the village. After securing his help, the diviner leads twelve tribesmen on a long journey as part of the rain-bringing ceremony. Eventually they return to the village to enact the ceremony proper, and incredible events ensue. In the meantime, there is always skepticism of the diviner's abilities; indeed, he might be merely bewitching the village for his own purposes. Or is he...?
